The Old Family
and how we got here
Isabella was the mother of Christina McLaren, the father being John McLaren, Handloom Weaver. This we are told in Christina's death registration. However, as seen on Christina's page we had quite a conundrum identifying them as there was another Isabella and John McLaren in the town with a daughter Christina almost the same age as theirs. This wrong family is -
John McLaren, 61, Labourer
wife Isabella, 59
Christian,
25 (could be Dresser)
John, 25, GL (General Labourer?), all born in
County
George, 20
William, 15 both Iron Turners born outside
County
They were next door to our Christina Campbell nee
McLaren. In the Scottish Church Records, John McLaren and Isabel
King had Janet 1809, Christian 1811, both b Kilmadock then James 1815
& George 1818 both b Gorbals so, although not a perfect fit, looks
like the above family.
In the same street, Doune East Street, we have -
John McLaren, 60, County Constable
wife Isabel, 50
Isabel, 20
Jean, 15, both Cotton workers, all born in County
Is this our Isabel Maxwell? Well she should be 59 and the
only children we know to them are Janet 1804, John 1807 and William
1809 (and, of course, Christina around 1812) all b Kilmadock which
doesn't match the above but doesn't contradict it either.
However I'm not happy with a County Constable here matching a Handloom
Weaver in Christina's death record. Is it possible there were
three John and Isabel McLarens around the same age in the same small
town?
Isabel Maxwell was born in Kincardine near Doune to
William Maxwell and Janet Buchanan but we really don't know much about
any of them. Kincardine is a parish rather than a town and it
centres round Blairdrummond, famous for its elephants, lions and
wolves nowadays.
