The Old Family
and how we got here
I believe he was known as Willie although my sources all knew him as Grandad! He seems to have worked his way up in engineering from being a clerk to the general manager, his dad having done something similar in the furniture trade. The company was Melville Brodie Engineering who probably supplied heavy engineering for the Kirkcaldy Linoleum industry. He was born in the West End of Glasgow in what would have been reasonable accommodation for the period and at the time of his marriage was living beside Glasgow Rangers' Ibrox Park, probably right across the road from it. I have no proof of this but I would guess he would have been a Rangers fan if he was a Protestant in Glasgow living beside the ground. In between the spells in Glasgow he lived in Edinburgh, very close to where Sandra and I lived, which came as quite a surprise to Sandra. His parents had previously lived in Edinburgh so it was Edinburgh, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Glasgow.
We believe he served in the navy in World War I as the uniform below would suggest. Note the cap badge with the anchor.
A close up of the badge shows a little star as well. Sandra's cousin Douglas is researching this.
After the death of his wife Annie he remarried which is a shame from a family history point of view as many items such as photographs or heirlooms may have gone to "the other side" rather than the Mackays.
As with his wife Annie, I'm not the best person to be writing about him and anyone who is interested in this tree probably knows more about him from a personal perspective than I possibly can.
